The Alfa Laval rotary spray head tank cleaning machine is a free-rotating spinner that uses low volumes of cleaning media at low pressure for effective cleaning. Types of rotary spray heads
The Alfa Laval rotary spray head range is organised by tank volume, hygienic level, and documentation. Four families cover almost every hygienic CIP duty: Multi for general hygienic tanks, Sani SB for tanks that need 3-A authorisation and ATEX approval, UltraPure for biotech and pharmaceutical vessels, and the compact Micro line for very small tanks and reactors. Choosing the right family is primarily a question of tank volume, required certification, and whether the head must survive a classified atmosphere.

Multi family
The Multi family covers general-duty rotary spray head service. MultiMidget handles tanks between 1 and 10 m³. MultiMagnum extends the range to 5–40 m³. Bodies are AISI 316 and 316L stainless steel with duplex steel bearing race parts. All materials are FDA-compliant per 21CFR§177, finished to Ra 0.8 µm inside and outside. Threaded, clip-on, and weld-on inlets are offered in BSP, NPT, ISO 2037, DIN 11850, and BPE, so the same unit can drop onto almost any existing spray-ball port. Multi units lubricate on the cleaning fluid and are the default choice when a 3-A mark or a Q-doc package is not part of the specification.
Sani SB family
Sani SB units cover the regulated hygienic band. Three models are available: SaniMidget SB (1–15 m³), SaniMagnum SB (5–50 m³), and SaniMega SB (40–400 m³). All three are authorised to carry the 3-A symbol. Standard supply includes 2.2 material certificates, and Q-doc plus ATEX are offered as options. Non-metallic wetted parts use PEEK 450G with FDA compliance. The ATEX rating is Category 1 for Zone 0/20 under Directive 2014/34/EU, marked II 1G Ex h IIB/IIC and II 1D Ex h IIIC. That combination makes them suitable for spirits distilleries, dust-classified powder handling, and other classified areas where a general-duty head cannot be used.
UltraPure family
UltraPure units are configured for biotech and pharmaceutical service in line with cGMP. Surfaces are electropolished to Ra 0.5 µm inside and out, and the polymer is USP Class VI approved and tested. Documentation extends to Q-doc plus FAT/SAT with IQ and OQ protocols. This is the correct rotary spray head specification when qualification, traceability, and surface finish are audited.
Industries and applications
Rotary spray heads are specified wherever a hygienic tank needs repeatable, low-consumption cleaning between batches or product changes. In a typical CIP loop, the rotary spray head is mounted through the top of the vessel and connected to a CIP supply line; a CIP pump drives water, detergent, and rinse cycles through the head, and a return pump or gravity drain evacuates the used fluid. Upstream, the process line feeds product into the vessel through mix-proof or hygienic butterfly valves; downstream, the tank discharges to filling, filtration, or a downstream unit operation. Dairy, brewery, and food
In dairies, breweries, distilleries, and general food and beverage plants, the priority is a shorter CIP window and lower water use per cycle. Multi and Sani SB units are the usual choice: they retrofit onto existing spray-ball ports, cut cleaning time by around 40%, and reduce cleaning fluid consumption in the same range. Fermenters and bright beer tanks in the 5–50 m³ band map naturally onto MultiMagnum and SaniMagnum SB; smaller batch tanks and IBCs in the 1–15 m³ band map onto MultiMidget and SaniMidget SB. For spirits distilleries and powder-handling areas classified as Zone 0/20, the ATEX-approved Sani SB variants are the correct specification.
Personal care and cosmetics
Cosmetic and personal care tanks often contain agitators, baffles, and internal structures that shadow static spray balls. A rotary spray head lays down a swirling fan pattern that reaches behind these obstructions, and the same unit can be installed at any angle, which helps when the top plate is congested with instrumentation. Multi and Sani families both suit this duty; the choice usually comes down to whether the plant requires 3-A documentation.
Biotech and pharmaceutical
Biotech and pharmaceutical vessels require a documented surface finish, a defined polymer, and full qualification. The UltraPure variants are built for this: electropolished Ra 0.5 µm surfaces, USP Class VI PEEK, and a Q-doc package that includes EN 1935/2004, EN 10204 type 3.1, FDA, GMP EC 2023/2006, EU 10/2011, ADI, and QC DoCs. FAT and SAT protocols with IQ and OQ can be added for end-user execution. Bioreactors, media preparation tanks, and buffer vessels between 0.05 m³ and 15 m³ are typical duties. How rotary spray heads work
A rotary spray head is a simple device with no motor and no external drive. The volumetric flow of cleaning fluid enters the inlet, passes through the body, and exits through slots or ports arranged around a rotating head. Reaction forces from those jets rotate the head about its axis, and the fan-shaped jets lay a swirling pattern across the tank wall. This creates both direct impact for soil removal and a cascading downward flow that wets the entire internal surface. All lubrication is provided by the cleaning fluid itself; there are no oiled bearings that could contaminate product.
Operating principle and components
The main components are the inlet connection, the body and bearing race, the rotating head with drilled or slotted ports, and, on Sani and UltraPure variants, a retention clip. Wetted metallic parts are AISI 316 or 316L; bearing race parts on the Multi family use duplex stainless steel (UNS S31803). Non-metallic parts on Sani SB and UltraPure units are PEEK, and on Micro-class units PTFE is used. Working pressure is typically 1–3 bar with 2 bar recommended, extending to 1–4 bar on the larger SaniMega SB. Maximum working temperature is 95 °C and maximum ambient is 140–150 °C depending on family.
How to select the right rotary spray head
Five factors drive selection: tank volume, spray pattern, certification, materials and surface finish, and mounting. Tank volume sets the family: 0.05–1 m³ points to SaniMicro, 1–15 m³ to Midget-class units, 5–50 m³ to Magnum-class units, and 40–400 m³ to SaniMega SB. Spray pattern is chosen by geometry: 360° for full coverage, 270° up for tanks where the outlet cone drains naturally without extra top-down wetting, and 180° down for shallow vessels or lids with heavy soil. Certification is driven by the industry: 3-A for dairy and hygienic food; ATEX Category 1 Zone 0/20 for classified areas; USP Class VI and cGMP with Q-doc plus FAT/SAT for biotech and pharma.
Materials and surface finish follow certification. Standard hygienic finish is Ra 0.8 µm inside and outside. UltraPure units are electropolished to Ra 0.5 µm on both surfaces. Mounting is a practical constraint: threaded inlets are the simplest retrofit onto existing spray-ball ports; clip-on inlets sit inside a mating socket and are removed for inspection without cutting; weld-on inlets give the cleanest hygienic joint and, on Sani SB units, meet 3-A Hygienic Standard 78-## when installed per the manual. Rotary spray heads can be installed at any angle, which matters on top plates crowded with agitator drives, level probes, and CIP returns.
Rotary spray heads versus static spray balls and rotary jet heads
Three categories cover most hygienic tank cleaning: static spray balls, rotary spray heads, and rotary jet heads. Static spray balls flood the wall from fixed holes and rely entirely on cascading flow; they need high flow to compensate for weak impact and often leave shadows behind internals. Rotary spray heads add rotation, which turns the same flow into a moving fan pattern, giving both wetting and mechanical impact and cutting cleaning time and fluid use by up to 40% versus a spray ball. Rotary jet heads (a separate category) use gear-driven, indexed high-impact jets at higher pressure for very heavy soils and larger tanks; they clean by impact rather than wetting.
