Alfa Laval SB

Alfa Laval SB

The Alfa Laval SB rotary spray head family covers hygienic tank cleaning across vessels from 1 m³ to 400 m³. Four models — the SaniMidget SB, SaniMidget SB UltraPure, SaniMagnum SB, and SaniMega SB — share a common working principle: cleaning media drives the head to rotate, producing fan-shaped jets that sweep a swirling pattern across every internal surface. The cascading flow delivers both wetting coverage and impact cleaning without any external drive or motor.

All standard SB units are authorised to carry the 3-A symbol and are ATEX Category 1 approved for installation in zone 0/20 for use in explosive atmospheres. Metallic components are AISI 316L; non-metallic parts are PEEK 450G, compliant with FDA 21CFR§177. Both clip-on and weld-on mounting variants are available across the range, and models are designed for retrofit onto traditional spray ball installations. The SaniMidget SB UltraPure adds PEEK MG non-metallic parts with USP Class VI certification for biotech and pharmaceutical processes where tighter material traceability is required.

Get in touch

The SB rotary spray head series addresses a specific engineering problem in pumps-what-is-cleaning-in-place-and-why-does-it-matter">CIP design: static spray balls rely entirely on volume to cover a tank surface, which wastes cleaning media and extends cycle times. The SB family uses a rotating head driven by flow energy alone, concentrating cleaning media into fan-shaped jets that trace a repeating swirling pattern throughout the tank. This converts the same flow rate into greater surface impact and broader wetting coverage — 360° full wetting as standard, with a 270° up pattern available for top-entry tanks where upward-only projection is needed.

Model selection by tank volume

Four distinct models span the 1–400 m³ range. The SaniMidget SB handles tanks from 1–15 m³, with a wetting radius up to 3 m and an impact cleaning radius up to 1.4 m at working pressures of 1–3 bar. The SaniMidget SB UltraPure covers the same tank and pressure range with a modified non-metallic specification — PEEK MG rather than PEEK 450G — to meet USP Class VI requirements and current good manufacturing practice documentation standards for biotech and pharmaceutical environments. The SaniMagnum SB scales to 5–50 m³, extending the wetting radius to 4.5 m and the impact cleaning radius to 2.4 m, with a recommended tank size of 23–68 m³. At the top of the range, the SaniMega SB covers 40–400 m³ tanks with a recommended tank size of 50–350 m³, reaching a wetting radius of 6 m and an impact cleaning radius of 3 m at working pressures of 1–4 bar.

Construction and material specification for CIP hygienic tank cleaning

All metallic components across the standard SB range are manufactured from AISI 316L stainless steel. Non-metallic parts are PEEK 450G, an FDA-compliant polymer per 21CFR§177 that tolerates operating temperatures up to 95 °C and ambient temperatures up to 150 °C. Surface finish is Ra 0.8 µm on the SaniMagnum SB and SaniMega SB; the SaniMidget SB and SaniMidget SB UltraPure specify Ra < 0.8 µm. The SaniMidget SB UltraPure substitutes PEEK MG, adding USP Class VI certification for pharmaceutical-grade applications. Lubrication across all models is provided by the cleaning media itself — no separate lubricant supply is required.

How flow rate and pressure relate to cleaning reach

Performance curves for each model plot flow rate (m³/h) and cleaning radius (m) against inlet pressure — 0–3 bar for SaniMidget and SaniMagnum, 0–4 bar for SaniMega. Clip-on versions consistently deliver a higher flow rate than equivalent weld-on installations: approximately 0.5 m³/h additional flow for the SaniMidget SB, 1.5 m³/h for the SaniMagnum SB, and 2 m³/h for the SaniMega SB. Recommended operating pressure for SaniMidget and SaniMagnum is 2 bar; SaniMega specifies 2–3 bar. Inlet pressure figures are taken immediately upstream of the unit, so pipeline pressure drop between pump and unit must be accounted for in system design. Performance testing for the family notes water temperature during testing at approximately 20 °C. The SaniMega SB also offers 360° High Flow and 270° High Flow configurations for applications requiring elevated throughput.

Qualification documentation for regulated processes

Standard qualification documentation — Q-doc — covers EN 1935/2004, EN 10204 type 3.1 inspection certificate, FDA declaration of conformity, GMP EC 2023/2006, EU 10/2011, ADI, and QC declarations. Material certificates are supplied as EN 10204 type 2.2. The SaniMidget SB UltraPure extends this package with a USP Class VI certificate and an expanded Q-doc+ FAT/SAT option that includes requirement specifications, design specifications with traceability matrix, factory acceptance test protocols incorporating IQ and OQ, and a site acceptance test protocol for end-user execution. ATEX approval under Directive 2014/34/EU applies to all models, rated Category 1 for installation in zone 0/20 with gas rating II 1G Ex h IIB 85 °C–175 °C Ga and dust rating II 1D Ex h IIIC T85 °C–T140 °C Da.

Industries

The Alfa Laval SB rotary spray head range serves dairy processing, food processing, beverage processing, and beer production — industries where hygienic tank cleaning to a defined standard is a production-critical requirement. The SaniMidget SB UltraPure variant extends the family's reach into biotech and pharmaceutical manufacturing, where cGMP documentation, USP Class VI polymer compliance, and FAT/SAT qualification protocols are required. Across all these sectors, the consistent AISI 316L construction, 3-A certification, and ATEX approval simplify equipment qualification regardless of product or process.

Verified tank cleaning on every CIP cycle

Adding Alfa Laval Rotacheck Basic and Rotacheck Plus to your rotary jet head installations turns tank cleaning from an assumption into documented proof. Rotacheck Plus learns the cleaning signature during the first CIP cycle and compares every cycle after it against that reference, alerting the operator the moment the pattern drifts.

Tank volume is the primary selection factor. The SaniMidget SB covers 1–15 m³, the SaniMagnum SB covers 5–50 m³, and the SaniMega SB covers 40–400 m³. Where tank volumes overlap between models — for example a 10 m³ tank that fits both SaniMidget and SaniMagnum — the SaniMagnum's greater wetting radius (4.5 m vs. 3 m) may be preferable if the tank geometry includes baffles or agitators that require longer throw.

Yes. All models in the SB family are designed to retrofit directly onto traditional spray ball installations. The clip-on variants use a standard BPE US or ISO 2037 connection with an easy-on/off clip, so no welding is required on the tank. Clip-on models also deliver a slightly higher flow rate than the equivalent weld-on — for example approximately 1.5 m³/h additional flow on the SaniMagnum SB — which can influence CIP cycle time.

Standard Q-doc includes an EN 10204 type 3.1 material inspection certificate, EN 1935/2004 declaration of conformity, FDA DoC, GMP EC 2023/2006 DoC, EU 10/2011 DoC, ADI DoC, and QC DoC. The SaniMidget SB UltraPure adds a USP Class VI certificate and an expanded Q-doc+ FAT/SAT package covering requirement specifications, design specifications with traceability matrix, and full IQ/OQ factory and site acceptance test protocols.
