The Alfa Laval SB Static Mixer is a liquid mixer developed specifically for the brewery and beverage sectors, where gas dispersion and liquid blending must occur reliably under high pressure. This unit functions without moving parts, housing a precision-engineered insert within a robust stainless steel outer shell. By eliminating rotating elements, the mixer utilizes the kinetic energy of the process flow to achieve homogenous results, making it an ideal choice for hygienic environments where mechanical simplicity translates directly to process uptime.

Engineering for High-Efficiency Mixing

At the core of this liquid mixer is a working principle that combines pressure and turbulence. The internal insert is fitted with propeller-shaped wings that set the incoming liquid into rotation. Immediately following this, another pair of wings reverses the rotation direction. This rapid change creates the turbulence necessary for effective mixing. For HP Mixer Type L variants equipped with a gas connection, the inlet is strategically located at the point of maximum turbulence. This ensures that injected gases, such as CO2 or O2, are dispersed into very small bubbles that dissolve rapidly and uniformly into the liquid phase.

Hygienic Construction and Material Integrity

Material selection is critical for liquid mixing equipment used in beverage production. All product-wetted steel surfaces of the SB Static Mixer are manufactured from EN 1.4404 (AISI 316L) stainless steel, providing high corrosion resistance. Wetted seals are made from EPDM, ensuring compatibility with standard cleaning regimes. As the mixer is categorized as a pressure vessel, its design follows the EN 13445 standard for unfired pressure vessels. It is essential to monitor chloride ion concentrations to prevent damage to the wetted surfaces; the unit is rated to handle up to 100 ppm at 20 °C, which reduces to 10 ppm at 60 °C to maintain long-term vessel integrity.

Installation and Operational Flexibility

The SB Static Mixer offers significant installation flexibility, as it can be mounted in either horizontal or vertical positions. For processes involving low flow rates, vertical installation with the liquid inlet positioned at the top is recommended to enhance the mixing action and gas dissolving efficiency. The unit is typically mounted by welding directly into the surrounding pipe system. To facilitate easy dismantling for inspection, it is recommended that no pipe holders are fixed directly to the mixer body. Before commissioning, the entire pipe system must be thoroughly cleaned of particles and welding remnants, often conducted at elevated temperatures where surface safety precautions are mandatory.

Simplified Maintenance and Lifetime Safety

One of the primary advantages of a static liquid agitator over dynamic alternatives is the reduction in maintenance requirements. While there is no strict mandatory inspection schedule, Alfa Laval recommends an annual dismantling of the mixer for a visual inspection of the internal insert to check for mechanical damage or corrosion. Furthermore, a visual check of any protective devices, such as covers or guards, should be performed at least every 12 months to ensure safety performance is maintained. This preventative approach, combined with the lack of wear parts, ensures the mixer provides a low total cost of ownership throughout its service life.

Value in Beverage Processing

For industrial producers, the SB Static Mixer provides a standardized, calculable solution for blending. Unlike imprecise mixing methods, the pressure drop for these units can be accurately calculated using the formula ΔP = Q² / Kv², where Kv represents the flow coefficient for water. This allows engineers to size the mixer precisely for their specific application, whether it involves dissolving gases into beer or blending liquid beverage components. By choosing a genuine Alfa Laval solution, producers benefit from a design that meets rigorous PED regulations while delivering the repeatability required for modern beverage quality standards.

Sales Representative

I have been working in technical sales at Euroflow GmbH for over four years. As a master brewer and industrial electrician, I combine practical process knowledge with electrical engineering expertise. I assess requirements pragmatically, develop implementable solution proposals together with partners, advise on the right component selection, and remain a reliable contact even after the decision is made. My focus is on straightforward implementation, economic results, and quality and hygiene requirements.

FAQ

In which regions does Euroflow operate?

At low flow rates, vertical installation with the liquid inlet at the top is recommended. This orientation significantly improves the mixing action and the efficiency of gas dissolution compared to a horizontal setup. For mixers with gas connections, ensure the inlet is positioned closest to the upstream liquid inlet end.

The SB Static Mixer operates within a temperature range of 0 °C to 90 °C. The maximum operation pressure depends on the diameter: it is 1,500 kPa (15 bar) for diameters up to 101.6 mm and 1,000 kPa (10 bar) for diameters exceeding 101.6 mm. Operating outside these limits creates a hazard where the vessel might leak or burst.

The product-wetted steel surfaces are manufactured from EN 1.4404 (AISI 316L) stainless steel. All wetted seals are made from EPDM. These materials are chosen for their compatibility with beverage products and standard cleaning chemicals, provided chloride ion limits are respected.
