Alfa Laval Multi

Alfa Laval Multi

The Alfa Laval MultiMagnum and MultiMidget are rotary spray head cleaning units built for hygienic environments across food, beverage, dairy, and brewing applications. The MultiMidget handles tanks from 1–10 m³; the MultiMagnum covers the 5–40 m³ range, so both small-format process vessels and larger production tanks are addressed within one product family.

Both units are driven entirely by the flow of the cleaning media — no external motor required. The rotating head distributes fan-shaped jets in a swirling pattern that wets every internal surface, with a cascading flow ensuring continuous coverage down to the vessel floor. Alfa Laval specifies up to 40% faster cleaning cycles and up to 40% reduction in cleaning costs versus traditional spray balls, driven by improved wetting and impact, not higher liquid consumption.

Both models can be installed at any angle and are available with threaded BSP or NPT connections, making retrofit from an existing spray ball straightforward in most cases. FDA 21CFR§177 material conformity and a 2.1 material certificate are available for both units.

Get in touch

The MultiMagnum and MultiMidget deliver rotary spray head cleaning through a flow-driven rotation mechanism rather than a fixed-nozzle or gear-driven approach. When cleaning media enters the unit, the volumetric flow causes the spray head to rotate. The resulting fan-shaped jets layout a swirling pattern across the interior of the vessel — covering sidewalls, roof, and base — while the cascading liquid flow ensures that surfaces not directly impacted by a jet are still wetted by the draining liquid above them.

How spray pattern selection affects CIP coverage

Both models are available in three spray patterns: 360°, 270° upward, and 180° downward. The 360° pattern is the general-purpose option for open, unobstructed tanks. The 270° upward pattern suits tanks where the head is mounted toward the base and coverage priority is the upper vessel walls and roof. The 180° downward pattern is appropriate for top-mounted installations where the focus is the lower vessel interior. Choosing the correct pattern for tank geometry reduces cleaning time and media consumption without mechanical changes to the unit.

Self-lubricating design and maintenance considerations

Both the MultiMagnum and MultiMidget are self-lubricating: the cleaning fluid lubricates internal bearing and rotation components during operation, eliminating the need for external lubricants that could pose contamination risks. Bearing race parts are manufactured from Duplex stainless (UNS S31803) for wear resistance under cyclic loading. Hydraulic shock and abrasive particulate are the main mechanical risks; a filter in the supply line is recommended to prevent particulate ingress. Neither unit is rated for gas evacuation or air dispersion; steaming guidance is provided in the manual.

Material credentials and surface finish

Inlet connections and balls are 316 stainless (UNS S31600). The head is 316 stainless (UNS S31603). Standard surface finish is Ra 0.8 µm externally and internally. Wetted materials conform to FDA 21CFR§177 and a 2.1 material certificate is available on request. Maximum working temperature is 95 °C with a maximum ambient temperature of 140 °C.

Sizing and model selection

The MultiMidget is rated for tanks from 1–10 m³ with a wetting radius up to 3 m and an effective cleaning radius up to 1.4 m. The MultiMagnum is designed for 5–40 m³ tanks, sharing the same 3 m wetting radius but providing an effective cleaning radius up to 2 m. For tanks in the 5–10 m³ overlap, choose the model based on residue type, tank geometry, and whether the larger cleaning radius is required to reliably reach all surfaces. Both models support threaded, weld-on and (for MultiMidget) clip-on connection types for easy retrofit.

Industries

Rotary spray head cleaning with the MultiMagnum and MultiMidget is widely used across dairy processing, food and beverage processing, and brewing operations where validated, repeatable CIP cycles are required. The product family also supports intermediate bulk container and personal-care process lines where hygienic materials and fast turnarounds matter. Use the MultiMidget for smaller vessels and the MultiMagnum where a larger effective cleaning radius is needed.

Verified tank cleaning on every CIP cycle

Adding Alfa Laval Rotacheck Basic and Rotacheck Plus to your rotary jet head installations turns tank cleaning from an assumption into documented proof. Rotacheck Plus learns the cleaning signature during the first CIP cycle and compares every cycle after it against that reference, alerting the operator the moment the pattern drifts.

  • Real validation: Built-in teach-in records jet impact and timing, then flags any deviation automatically.
  • Hygienic design: 3-A approved and built to EHEDG guidelines. AISI 316L wetted parts, Ra 0.5 µm, EPDM seals, suitable for PW and WFI.
  • Clear status: Rotation OK, Alarm and Idle via PNP outputs to your PLC, plus visual light indication on the unit.
  • Durable: IP66/IP67, wetted parts −40 °C to 110 °C (140 °C for up to 1 hour), 15 bar diaphragm overload rating.

Both the MultiMidget (1–10 m³) and the MultiMagnum (5–40 m³) cover this overlap. The deciding factor is the effective cleaning radius: MultiMidget up to 1.4 m, MultiMagnum up to 2 m. For tanks with agitators or baffles, the larger cleaning radius of the MultiMagnum is usually the better choice.

The wetting radius (max. 3 m for both models) describes how far the cascading liquid reaches; the effective cleaning radius is where jets deliver sufficient impact to remove residues (1.4 m for MultiMidget, 2 m for MultiMagnum). Match vessel diameter to the cleaning radius for effective residue removal.

Yes. Both models are available with standard BSP and NPT threaded connections and common weld-on or clip-on options for retrofit. Wetted materials are 316 stainless and conform to FDA 21CFR§177, and a 2.1 material certificate is available.
