Alfa Laval Oval Manway Cover

Alfa Laval Oval Manway Cover

The oval manway cover is a stainless steel tank access solution for process tanks and vessels in the dairy, food, beverage, and brewery sectors. Covers mount above or below the liquid level on the tank side. The seal design is unaffected by positive or negative pressure inside the vessel. Operators can open a cover by loosening the handle to allow for quick inspection or full tank entry. This stainless steel manway cover range provides a secure fit for static tanks.

The range spans five model variants including Type O, LKD 532 x 432, LKD 532 x 432 flat lid, LKD 542 x 446, and LKD 440 x 320. Each is rated for different tank configurations and static pressure requirements. Ratings start from 1.5 bar and reach up to 4.8 bar. Steel parts are available in 1.4301 (304) or 1.4404 (316L). Every model ships with a 3.1 material certificate per EN10204. FDA-compliant seal materials are standard, and 3-A approved versions are available for specific models.

The oval manway cover range addresses tank openings from compact side-mounted inspection points to full-entry hatches rated for substantial static pressure. All five variants share a construction consisting of a stainless steel cover plate with a shaped gasket and a frame that seats against the tank wall. The seal sits in a hygienic position. It is not displaced by positive or negative pressure changes inside the tank. This makes the range highly reliable for vessels containing liquids at various levels.

Hygienic tank access pressure ratings

Pressure capability varies significantly across the model list. The LKD 532 x 432 carries the highest rating at 4.8 bar (480 kPa) maximum static pressure and is tested at 3.75 bar (375 kPa). The LKD 542 x 446 handles 2.8 bar (280 kPa) static pressure with a test pressure of 4.2 bar (420 kPa). For applications requiring a low profile, the LKD 532 x 432 flat lid handles up to 2.3 bar (230 kPa) static. The LKD 440 x 320 is rated at 1.5 bar (150 kPa) static and resists a maximum negative working pressure of 0.5 bar (50 kPa). Selecting the correct model depends on the specific operating pressure envelope of the vessel.

Seal material selection and thermal limits

All models accept four primary seal materials to ensure process compatibility. EPDM operates from -15 °C to 90 °C but cannot be used with oils or fats. NBR is suitable for temperatures between -30 °C and 110 °C. Silicone (Q) extends the range from -50 °C to 200 °C. FPM handles the widest thermal range from -10 °C to 250 °C. All seals carry FDA compliance. It is important to note that Silicone (Q) does not meet the GB 4806.16-2025 standard and cannot be used in China based on current regulations.

Construction materials and hygienic finish

Steel parts for every model are manufactured in either 1.4301 (304) or 1.4404 (316L) stainless steel. Any plastic components used in the handle or hinges are made of nylon. The Type O uses an electropolished cover with a brushed frame where internal surfaces stay below Ra 0.8 µm. The LKD series models feature an acid pickled standard finish with product-wetted surfaces at Ra 0.8 µm. On models ordered with 3-A approved options, the surface finish is electropolished and the lid wetted surface reaches Ra 0.4 µm.

Shadowless installation for beverage vessels

The LKD 542 x 446 utilizes an angled, shaped frame to seat against the tank wall. This design prevents the formation of recesses where liquid can pool or CIP spray shadows can occur. The angled frame geometry also makes external cleaning easier for operators. The lip seal design used on this specific model maintains its hygienic position regardless of internal pressure. With a static pressure rating of 2.8 bar (280 kPa), it is appropriate for pressurized beverage and brewery vessels requiring complete CIP coverage.
