The Alfa Laval ThinkTop V50 valve sensing and control unit is built around a modular communication board and a contactless sensor that reads stem position across the full stroke. It converts PLC output signals into pneumatic energy for the air-operated valve, with the option of 0 or 1 solenoid valve on the same platform — covering indication-only and actuated configurations across an entire hygienic line.

Hygienic valve control for Alfa Laval diaphragm, butterfly, and single seat valves

Compatibility spans diaphragm valves, butterfly valves, single seat valves, double seat valves, ball valves, and shutter valves, with the Anytime configurator guiding correct selection by valve size and type. Valve stem length below 65 mm is supported. The mechanical interface uses a threaded G⅛ air fitting in Ø6 mm or ¼", and the M16 cable gland accepts Digital wiring of Ø4–10 mm² or AS-I wiring of Ø2–7 mm², with a separate M12 seat lift sensor gland for upper seat applications.

Commissioning sequence with Auto, Live, and Flex Setup

Auto Setup is rule-based. The engineer presses SELECT to enter the setup menu, then ENTER to start the sequence. The unit recognises the valve from its DNA profile, selects the tolerance band automatically, and writes the configuration without further interaction. Live Setup performs the same sequence remotely, so the control head stays closed during recommissioning. Flex Setup is the retrofit mode for special cases including Koltek Type 633 three-position valves, regulating valves, safety valves, SMP-EC, and legacy installations that fall outside the Auto Setup rule set. Auto and Live Setup enable full valve operation monitoring and interlock, while Flex limits status feedback to status error reporting.

360-degree LED indication mapped to valve position

The 360-degree light guide is mapped to discrete actuator states: green for de-energised, white for main open, blue for upper seat lift, and yellow for lower seat push. Solid colours indicate operation mode, flashing colours indicate setup mode, and red flashing combinations flag specific error states without requiring access to the PLC HMI.

Pulse seat clean and CIP seat cleaning economics

Pulse seat clean is a valve-position-based function that releases a calibrated CIP pulse and returns the valve to its starting position, with up to 95% CIP liquid savings per seat clean. The minimum PLC input duration is 500 ms, and a two-second electrical and visual handshake confirms successful completion before the next pulse can be triggered. PLC bit mapping is fixed: on AS-Interface the trigger is O0 and the main solenoid is O1, while on IO-Link the trigger is O2 and the main solenoid is O4; main valve feedback is returned on I1 (energised) and I0 (de-energised). The function is a standard feature on V50 AS-Interface and V50 IO-Link variants fitted with one solenoid valve and is intended for high CIP flow pressure on i-Series actuators, Single Seat Valves, and LKLA-T ø85 Butterfly valves. Pulse seat clean is not available on the V50 Digital variant, and it does not apply to diaphragm, ball, shutter, small single seat, safety, or sample valves.

IO-Link valve controller, AS-Interface, and Digital interfaces

The V50 Digital is a 24 VDC PNP unit with a 6-wire, 8-pin M12 connection, EN 61131-2 compliant inputs and outputs rated 24 V / 100 mA, and a PLC input card classed as Class 2 per cULus. The V50 ASI2 supports AS-Interface specification v2.11 with up to 31 nodes and slave profile 7FFF; the V50 ASI3 supports specification v3.0 with extended A/B addressing for up to 62 nodes and slave profile 7A77, both running on AS-Interface bus voltage of 29.5–31.6 VDC. The V50 IOL runs IO-Link COM2 at 38.4 kBaud, Port Class A, with data storage, a minimum cycle time of 5 ms, and up to 20 m cable to the IO-Link master. Two control board generations are in service: revisions AA–AD map to Device ID 1, and revision AE or later maps to Device ID 9 — the configuration tool automatically matches the correct IODD.

Valve state fail safe signal for PLC surveillance

Valve state is a decentralised function available on all V50 variants. The signal is held high during normal idle and operation, and drops low on conditions including sensor target missing (error 16), seat lift sensor issue (error 19), position not reached (error 20), unexpected valve movement (error 21), and safety stop (error 31). This gives maintenance teams an out-of-the-box surveillance bit without writing custom PLC logic and shortens fault-isolation time on long valve trains.

Reliability, materials, and washdown ratings

The housing uses Nylon PA 12 with 1.4301 / 304 stainless steel parts, NBR gaskets, and a stainless steel M12 chassis connector with gold-plated pins. Protection class IP69K and NEMA 4, 4X, and 6 ratings allow direct washdown, and the working temperature spans -10 °C to +60 °C. The control board has a calculated MTTF of 224 years, and the solenoid valve carries a B10 of 5 million cycles with a manual hold override — Alfa Laval recommends operating each solenoid once a month to prevent dry-out.
