Alfa Laval GJ Series rotary jet heads

Alfa Laval GJ Series rotary jet heads

The Alfa Laval GJ Series rotary jet head range delivers automated CIP tank cleaning across vessels from 0.5 m³ laboratory tanks to 113,560-litre underground fuel storage tanks. Nine models cover the full size spectrum. Inlet pressure and flow drive a geared rotation mechanism — no external motor — and the resulting jets sweep the entire tank interior in a precise, repeatable 360-degree cleaning pattern.

The GJ 7 handles drums, barrels, and filling equipment. The GJ A2 and GJ A6 target hygienic process tanks in food, dairy, and beverage facilities. The GJ 8, GJ 9, GJ PF, and GJ PF FT address medium to large industrial and hygienic tanks. At the top of the range, the GJ 4 and GJ 10 serve heavy industrial duties, including underground petroleum storage. All models reduce water and cleaning media consumption by concentrating mechanical impact on the tank surface rather than relying on liquid volume. The gear train runs on food-grade lubricants to minimise contamination risk during operation.

Get in touch

Every model in the Alfa Laval GJ Series rotary jet head range shares the same operating principle: inlet flow acts through a gear train to rotate the nozzles simultaneously around both vertical and horizontal axes. The first cycle lays down a coarse pattern across the tank wall. Subsequent cycles increase pattern density until full 360-degree coverage is reached, then the unit restarts the sequence. Cleaning energy concentrates on the tank surface repeatedly, which reduces water consumption and shortens cycle time compared with static spray balls.

How the geared rotation mechanism works

Spray balls depend entirely on liquid volume for coverage. The GJ Series uses a gear train to convert inlet flow into controlled, repeatable nozzle movement. Rotation speed and pattern density are set by the gear ratio, so every cleaning run produces the same result regardless of operator input. Stator options — LP, LV, STD, MV, HV, HV1, HV2, LM, SML, LRG, HP — let engineers tune cycle duration to match the tank volume and soil type without changing the basic 360-degree coverage pattern.

CIP tank cleaning performance across the size range

The GJ 7 is the smallest unit in the series, with a maximum throw length of 2–2.5 m and a working pressure range of 3.5–83 bar, making it suitable for drums, barrels, filling equipment, and small process vessels. At the other end, the GJ 4 reaches 30.5 m and operates at 3–21 bar to clean tanks from 150 to 2,250 m³. The GJ 10 is purpose-built for underground fuel storage: it passes through a 10 cm tank opening and cleans a single 113,560-litre tank in one insertion.

Between those extremes, the GJ A2 covers 0.5–1.5 m³ hygienic tanks; the GJ A6 handles 5–20 m³; the GJ 8 addresses 250–1,250 m³ industrial vessels; the GJ 9 targets IBCs and tanks up to 6 m tall; and the GJ PF/GJ PF FT pair covers 15–150 m³ in industrial and hygienic configurations respectively. The GJ BB is designed specifically for rapid barrel and drum cleaning, completing a full cycle in two to three minutes using just 30–45 litres of water per run.

Resource savings versus spray balls and manual cleaning

Alfa Laval documents up to 60% faster cleaning times and cleaning cost reductions of up to 70% compared with manual cleaning or traditional spray balls. The mechanical impact from geared nozzle rotation achieves effective soil removal at lower flow rates, so water usage, chemical dosing, and effluent volumes all decrease. For facilities running multiple CIP cycles per day, that reduction compounds across utilities and waste treatment costs.

Design details for hygienic and industrial environments

Hygienic variants — GJ A2, GJ A6, and GJ PF FT — address the surface-finish and material-traceability demands of food, beverage, and pharmaceutical production. These units are designed to retrofit spray balls, reducing cleaning-in-place costs. Industrial models such as the GJ 4, GJ 8, and GJ PF use 1.4404 (316L) stainless steel housings and gear-train lubricants suited for production safety. The slim profile common to all models allows insertion through small tank inlet openings, removing the need for confined-space entry.

Cleaning process validation and documentation

The cleaning process on GJ Series units can be validated using Alfa Laval Rotacheck. Several models are supplied with a 2.1 material certificate as standard documentation. Where higher traceability is required — 3.1 material certification or ATEX certification — Alfa Laval offers alternative models such as the TJ40G-HD, TJ20G, and SaniJet 20 with the Q-doc documentation package.
