Double Seal Valves SMP-BC
The Alfa Laval SMP-BC is a hygienic double seal valve engineered to handle two different products through the same valve body without any risk of cross-contamination. This pneumatic mixproof valve combines a standardised, cost-effective design with quick leakage detection and minimal maintenance requirements. Built with 316L stainless steel product-wetted parts and EPDM seals, the SMP-BC is a trusted choice for dairy, food, beverage and personal care processors who demand reliable product safety in their CIP lines and routing systems. Its top-loaded, modular construction supports versatile actuator sizing, multiple connection standards and integration with Alfa Laval ThinkTop V-Series sensing and control units.

How does the top-loaded design simplify mixproof valve maintenance?
Conventional mixproof valves often require full disassembly from the pipeline for seal replacement—an operation that consumes hours of downtime and demands re-alignment on reinstallation. The Alfa Laval SMP-BC takes a different approach. Its top-loaded architecture means the plug, bonnet, and seals withdraw upward through the actuator housing. Pipe connections stay intact. A plug clip system and clamp rings secure the valve bodies to the actuator, so technicians release the clip, extract the internals, swap seals, and reassemble—all in-line.
Few moving parts further reduce the maintenance burden. This double-seal mixproof valve has no complex linkages or balance chambers that require periodic adjustment. This translates directly into shorter planned maintenance windows and lower spare-parts inventory. For facilities running tight production schedules, top-loaded access can mean the difference between a 20-minute seal change and a half-shift teardown.
What materials make the SMP-BC suitable for hygienic processing?
Every product-wetted steel surface is 316L stainless steel (1.4401), the benchmark grade for corrosion resistance in dairy, food, and beverage environments. Internal surface finish is Ra ≤ 1.6 µm as standard, with an optional bright-polished finish of Ra ≤ 0.8 µm for applications demanding tighter microbiological control. Non-wetted steel components use 304 stainless steel (1.4301), balancing durability and cost on external surfaces.
Elastomer selection covers two formulations. EPDM is the default, rated from -10 °C to +140 °C and compatible with most CIP and SIP media. NBR is available as an option where fat- or oil-based product contact requires improved chemical resistance. Both seal materials sit in the valve's double-seal arrangement, with a leakage detection chamber vented to atmosphere between them. If either seal degrades, product drains visibly from this chamber before any cross-contamination can occur.
Material selection and surface finish can be specified at order to match the exact hygiene standard of each installation, from standard dairy CIP duties to high-care beverage filling.
Which actuator sizes and connection standards are available?
Modularity is central to the SMP-BC platform. Two pneumatic actuator diameters—ø89 mm and ø133 mm—cover the full valve range from DN40 to DN150. The smaller actuator serves DN40 and DN50 sizes; the larger actuator handles DN65 through DN150. For the DN40–DN50 range, an optional larger actuator (ø133 mm) is available when higher closing forces are needed, and a stronger spring option exists across actuator sizes for elevated line pressures.
Connection standards span ISO, DIN, SMS, and BS male configurations, plus ISO clamp fittings. A single valve platform integrates into European DIN-standard piping, ISO-standard dairy installations, and SMS-standard Scandinavian plants without custom adapters. Valve bodies are available in one-body (shut-off) or two-body (full mixproof) versions, and clamp liners or male parts can be specified per the required standard at time of order.
Choose actuator size and spring strength based on line pressure and valve diameter, then match the connection type to existing pipework—no engineering workarounds required.
Is ThinkTop V-series integration available for valve sensing and control?
The SMP-BC accepts the Alfa Laval ThinkTop V-series directly on the actuator head. ThinkTop units provide valve position sensing, diagnostics, and communication with plant automation systems. This eliminates the need for external limit switches or proximity sensors mounted on brackets—reducing both installation complexity and potential leak paths on the valve exterior.
For CIP-intensive plants running dozens of mixproof valves, ThinkTop integration centralises valve health monitoring and enables predictive maintenance strategies. Each valve reports its open/closed state and diagnostic status to the process control layer, giving operators real-time confirmation that every valve in a CIP sequence has actuated correctly.
Operating pressure across the range reaches 1000 kPa (10 bar) maximum at the inlet. When the actuator is supported by air on the spring side, maximum allowable pressure is 300 kPa (3 bar). These limits apply across all valve sizes and actuator configurations.

FAQ
In which regions does Euroflow operate?
The valve uses two independent seals separated by a vented chamber open to atmosphere. If either seal fails, product drains visibly from this chamber before it can reach the opposite process stream. This gives operators immediate visual confirmation of seal integrity—critical in any mixproof valve with leakage detection serving multi-product piping.
Top-loaded construction allows the plug, bonnet, and seals to be removed upward through the actuator without disconnecting the valve from the pipeline. A plug clip system secures internal components, so seal replacement requires no pipe realignment or gasket rework. The result is significantly shorter service intervals and reduced downtime during planned maintenance.
Yes. The SMP-BC accepts the ThinkTop V-series directly on the actuator head for valve position feedback, diagnostics, and integration with plant automation. No external limit switches or additional mounting hardware are required, which simplifies installation and reduces potential external leak points on the valve assembly.
