Alfa Laval access tank cover Type R

Alfa Laval access tank cover Type R

Hygienic manway cover Type R by Alfa Laval provides a durable, stainless steel access point for side-mounted tank openings, ideal for beverage processing and bottling lines. The outward-swinging rectangular lid can be positioned above or below the liquid level to allow product removal from the tank bottom or periodic interior inspection.

Constructed in 1.4301 or 1.4404 stainless steel with an internal finish of Ra < 0.8 µm, the cover meets hygienic surface requirements for wine, juice and beverage operations. Seal choices include EPDM (-15 °C to 90 °C), NBR (-30 °C to 110 °C), and FPM (-10 °C to 250 °C), and five Type R sizes cover calculated pressure ratings from 0.5 bar to 1.0 bar depending on model. Lid and frame are supplied with an EN 10204 3.1 material certificate.

Side-wall mounting on tanks and vessels puts specific demands on a hygienic manway cover. The rectangular tank cover is built for exactly that duty — sealing against static liquid pressure or wash cycle pressure while giving personnel clear, unobstructed access when the lid swings outward. Clamps draw the lid against the frame face, compressing the seal along the full perimeter. At below-liquid-level positions, that seal-to-frame contact is the primary containment boundary.

What steel grades are available for hygienic tank covers?

Steel parts are available in grade 1.4301 (304) and grade 1.4404 (316L). Grade 1.4404 provides greater resistance to chloride-containing fluids and aggressive CIP chemistries. Plastic components such as hinges and the opening knob are Nylon. Internal surfaces are finished to Ra < 0.8 µm; the external frame finish is brushed with Ra ≥ 3.0 µm.

Which seal material suits different process temperatures?

Seal selection depends on operating temperature and chemical compatibility. EPDM is rated from -15 °C to 90 °C and suits most warm-process beverage applications. NBR covers -30 °C to 110 °C for lower-temperature duties. FPM provides the widest range from -10 °C to 250 °C for high-temperature or chemically aggressive processes. Silicone (Q) is rated -50 °C to 200 °C but cannot be used in China because it does not meet GB 4806.16-2025.

What pressure ratings do rectangular tank covers carry?

Pressure ratings are model-dependent and stated as calculated maximum values for covers placed below the liquid level. The R-235x185 is rated to 0.5 bar for washing equipment duty. The R-440x332 and R-332x440 are rated to 0.5 bar for static tank and washing equipment use. The R-432x555 is rated to 0.8 bar and the R-555x432 to 1.0 bar, both for static tank and washing equipment applications.

Frame welding and seal contact requirements

To obtain a perfect seal and correct function, the frame must be welded carefully and correctly into the tank wall. After welding, always check that the seal is in full contact with the sealing surface; incomplete contact at below-liquid-level positions creates a leak path under static head pressure.

EN 10204 3.1 material certification

Both lid and frame are supplied with a 3.1 material certificate according to EN 10204. The certificate confirms that declared material grades match the actual batch used in manufacture and provides traceability documentation often required in beverage quality systems and audits.

Yes. The Type R table lists covers intended for below-liquid-level installation; model pressure ratings are stated as calculated maximum values from 0.5 bar to 1.0 bar depending on model. Proper frame welding and a post-weld check that the seal contacts the entire sealing surface are required for below-liquid-level service.

Choose based on operating temperature and chemical compatibility: EPDM covers -15 °C to 90 °C for most beverage duties, NBR covers -30 °C to 110 °C for lower-temperature needs, and FPM covers -10 °C to 250 °C where higher temperatures or aggressive chemistries are present. Silicone (Q) is not permitted in China per GB 4806.16-2025.

The EN 10204 3.1 certificate confirms the lid and frame were manufactured from the declared material batch with validated test results and is supplied with the cover and frame as standard, providing material traceability for quality audits.
