Double tube sheet safety for pharmaceutical heat exchanger applications

The Pharma-line series establishes a secure barrier against contamination through its double tube sheet design. The service medium is sealed in the shell by the first tube sheet, while the second tube sheet seals the product within the tubes. This physical separation ensures that any joint leakage is visually detectable between the sheets before fluid mixing occurs. All product wetted parts are manufactured from SS316L seamless tubes, featuring a surface finish of Ra < 0.5 µm for mechanical polishing or Ra < 0.4 µm for electropolishing. These smooth surfaces are intended to prevent biofilm accumulation.

WFI cooling with the Pharma-line Point of Use module

The Pharma-line Point of Use is a plug-and-play module for subloop cooling in hot pharmaceutical water systems. This unit remains sanitized during standby mode by utilizing a pitot tube arrangement. Hot water from the main loop enters the cooler and circulates continuously, and a Reynolds number greater than 4000 is maintained when main-line velocity exceeds 1 m/s. This turbulent flow maintains self-sanitization. When cooling is active, the module provides cold water within seconds, which limits hold-up volume and reduces water waste. The design features zero dead legs and no internal welds to support high-purity distribution.

Mechanical integrity and installation flexibility

Pharma-line units are designed in accordance with ASME BPE, USP, and cGMP. Flexible legs permit mounting on the floor, wall, or ceiling. Horizontal installations require a slope of between 1% and 5% to ensure the tube side remains fully drainable. If the unit is positioned vertically for full drainability, it should be installed with tube side connections downwards. Each unit is pressure tested before shipment and is compatible with steam sterilization cycles, supporting operational uptime in production environments.

The double tube sheet creates a physical gap between the service medium in the shell and the product in the tubes. If a leak occurs at either tube sheet joint, the fluid exits between the sheets for visual detection rather than mixing with the process media.

Regular inspection of the interior and exterior surfaces is necessary to maintain thermal performance. Gaskets must be replaced whenever the front cover is loosened, and bolts must be retightened in a diametrically staggered pattern progressing through four torque steps to a final torque of 70 Nm.

In standby mode, a pitot tube arrangement allows hot WFI from the main loop to circulate continuously through the Point of Use cooler and back. Maintaining a main line velocity above 1.0 m/s ensures the Reynolds number exceeds 4000, producing turbulent flow that keeps the module self-sanitizing without stagnant water.
