Alfa Laval Unique Mixproof Tank Outlet Valve

Alfa Laval Unique Mixproof Tank Outlet Valve

The Alfa Laval Unique Mixproof Tank Outlet valve is a double block-and-bleed valve engineered for safe, spillage-free handling of two different products through a single valve at tank inlets and outlets. Mounted directly on the tank bottom or wall, it prevents cross-contamination while maintaining full drainability and cleanability all the way up to the tank.

Plant engineers running matrix-piped systems in dairy, food, and beverage facilities rely on this valve to manage fluid intersections without process interruption. Leakage detection holes allow visual inspection without disassembly, giving early warning of seal wear before any product safety event occurs. The modular design supports a wide range of actuator, cleaning, and connection configurations to match the specific demands of each installation. SpiralClean options extend cleaning coverage to the leakage chamber and upper plug. A balanced seat-lift mechanism keeps operation safe under varying pressure conditions. For sites already running SMP-TO valves, a conversion flange allows direct replacement while reusing the existing tank flange.

Get in touch

The Alfa Laval Unique Mixproof Tank Outlet valve delivers double block-and-bleed separation at the point where pipeline and tank meet. Two independent sealing plugs isolate each product stream, and the leakage chamber between them vents any seal failure to atmosphere before cross-contamination can occur. That architecture is what makes the valve safe for simultaneous handling of two different products through one body.

How does leakage detection work on a mixproof tank outlet valve?

Leakage detection holes are built into the valve body. They allow visual inspection of the leakage chamber without removing the valve from service or disassembling any component. Any seal degradation becomes visible at the detection port before product integrity is compromised. This early-warning function directly reduces unplanned downtime and lowers maintenance costs by giving the operator a clear signal to act on before failure.

Full drainability and cleanability from pipeline to tank

Drainability runs all the way to the tank wall. The valve body connects to a tank flange or stub flange via a clamp, and the body can be rotated to any position by loosening that clamp slightly. This flexibility supports correct drain orientation regardless of tank geometry. The tank flange itself carries TÜV approval AD 2000 and an inspection certificate 3.1 per EN 10204, confirming material traceability for regulated production environments.

SpiralClean options extend CIP coverage into areas that standard spray patterns miss. External CIP of the leakage chamber, external CIP of the upper balanced plug, or a combined option covering both are available as discrete configurations. Each option is ordered independently, so cleaning coverage matches the process requirement without over-specifying the valve.

316L stainless steel construction and seal materials

All product-wetted steel parts are manufactured from 1.4404 (316L) stainless steel. Non-wetted structural steel parts use 1.4301 (304). Product-wetted elastomers are EPDM as standard, with HNBR, NBR, or FPM available as options to suit fluid compatibility requirements. Inside surface finish is either matt (blasted) at Ra <1.6 µm or bright (polished) at Ra <0.8 µm, selectable at order time.

Modular design and configuration for any tank outlet process

Two base versions exist: the Unique Mixproof TO Valve and the Unique Mixproof TO Valve with external cleaning. Both share the same valve body, plug, and actuator architecture. From that common platform, the actuator can be specified as basic or with seat-lift and seat-push functions. A balanced plug in the pipeline side is available as a separate option.

The balanced seat-lift mechanism maintains safe, controlled plug movement under differential pressure. That matters in tank outlet applications where head pressure from a partially filled tank can act against the plug during opening. Control and indication is handled by the ThinkTop V-Series, which provides sensing and position feedback without requiring additional field instruments.

Easy conversion from SMP-TO valves

A dedicated conversion flange allows direct replacement of an existing SMP-TO valve while reusing the original SMP-TO tank flange. No tank modification is required. That reduces retrofit cost and minimises production downtime during upgrade projects.

Operating pressure and temperature range

Maximum inlet pressure in the pipeline reaches 1000 kPa (10 bar). Air supply pressure is limited to 800 kPa (8 bar). Pressure ratings at the tank connection vary by valve size: DN50/51 is rated to 400 kPa; DN65/63.5, DN80/76.1, and DN100/101.6 standard configurations are rated to 450 kPa, with longstroke versions of DN65 and DN80 reaching 600 kPa. DN125 and DN150 standard versions are rated to 350 kPa, with options available at 250 kPa. Operating temperature spans -5°C to +125°C, depending on the elastomer grade selected.

A dedicated conversion flange makes direct replacement of an SMP-TO valve possible while reusing the original SMP-TO tank flange. No tank modification is required, which reduces retrofit cost and limits production downtime during the changeover.

EPDM is the standard elastomer for product-wetted seals. HNBR, NBR, and FPM are available as options to match the chemical compatibility and temperature requirements of specific process fluids. The valve operates across a temperature range of -5°C to +125°C, with the upper limit dependent on the elastomer grade selected.

SpiralClean delivers external CIP flow to areas that standard internal spray patterns cannot reliably reach, specifically the leakage chamber and the upper balanced plug. Each zone can be cleaned independently or in a combined configuration, and both are selectable as discrete order options so coverage is matched precisely to the process requirement.
