Alfa Laval Unique Mixproof hygienisches Doppelsitzventil

Alfa Laval Unique Mixproof hygienic mixproof valve

The Alfa Laval Unique Mixproof is a double block-and-bleed valve engineered to allow two different fluids to flow simultaneously through the same valve body without any risk of cross-contamination. In matrix piped systems, this capability ensures process safety in dairy, food, and beverage plants where product integrity is the primary requirement. Two independent plugs and seals separate the fluid streams at all times, with the space between them forming a leakage chamber held at atmospheric pressure throughout every operating condition. If a seal fails, product enters the leakage chamber and exits through the bottom outlet for immediate detection. The modular design supports four pre-configured versions, including SeatClean and UltraClean tiers, balanced plug options for pressure-peak protection, and SpiralClean technology for optimized cleaning. Product-wetted parts are 1.4404 (316L) stainless steel with EPDM elastomers as standard, supporting a temperature range of -5 °C to +125 °C and a maximum product pressure of 10 bar.

Get in touch

The Alfa Laval Unique Mixproof mixproof valve routes two incompatible fluids through a shared valve body simultaneously while maintaining physical separation between them. This is achieved through two independent plugs and seals where the space between the seals forms a leakage chamber at atmospheric pressure. This radial design ensures that virtually no product spillage occurs during valve operation, protecting the process environment and reducing waste.

How does the leakage chamber detect seal wear?

Leakage detection is passive and requires no disassembly for visual inspection. The chamber between the two sealing elements remains at atmospheric pressure. Should a leak occur, the fluid enters this chamber and exits through a dedicated bottom outlet. This provides advance notification of parts wear and allows for scheduled maintenance rather than emergency repairs. Leakage detection holes in the body confirm the valve state during every working condition.

What are the four cleanability tiers of the Unique Mixproof?

The valve is available in four pre-configured versions to meet specific cleanliness demands. The Unique Mixproof Basic provides fundamental cleaning of the plugs and leakage chamber. The SeatClean version introduces seat lift functionality, whereas the HighClean version adds external CIP connections for the leakage chamber and plugs. For the most demanding hygienic processes, the UltraClean version offers the highest level of cleanability. These modular configurations ensure the valve meets specific process requirements without unnecessary complexity.

How do balanced plugs prevent mixing during pressure spikes?

Pressure peaks in a processing line can occasionally force a standard plug off its seat. Balanced plugs solve this by equalizing the hydraulic forces acting on the plug, ensuring it remains closed regardless of pressure transients. This mechanical safeguard is essential for maintaining safety in high-capacity matrix systems. The valve can be configured with balanced or unbalanced plugs depending on the specific pressure profile of the installation.

What is SpiralClean and when is it required?

The SpiralClean system is an option for cleaning the spindle and the leakage chamber using a spiral flow pattern. This system improves the efficiency of Cleaning-in-Place (CIP) cycles by ensuring better coverage of internal surfaces. It can be specified alongside the lower flush option, which cleans the lower seal without requiring an external CIP connection. These options are ideal for processes with high cleanability demands or where reducing water and chemical consumption is a priority.

The valve uses two independent seals that create a leakage chamber held at atmospheric pressure. If a seal fails, the product is naturally directed into this chamber and out the bottom discharge pipe rather than being forced into the second product line. This design ensures that a single seal failure cannot result in product contamination.

The valve utilizes a modular design composed of base components like the body, plug, and actuator. While many parts are interchangeable, it is recommended to specify the required cleanability tier—Basic, SeatClean, HighClean, or UltraClean—at the time of order to ensure the actuator and plug configuration support seat lift or external CIP requirements.

In matrix systems, pressure spikes can occur when pumps start or valves close elsewhere in the system. Balanced plugs equalize the pressure acting on the plug face, preventing the valve from accidentally opening during these transients. This ensures continuous product safety even when the system experiences unexpected pressure fluctuations up to 10 bar.
