Alfa Laval LKC hygienic non-return valve

Alfa Laval LKC hygienic non-return valve

The Alfa Laval LKC is a hygienic non-return valve engineered to prevent reverse flow in single-directional process lines across the dairy, food, beverage, and brewery industries. Self-acting and spring-loaded, it opens under forward flow and closes the moment flow stops or reverses — no external actuation required.

Two variants cover the full range of installation orientations: the LKC-2 for vertical flow and the LKC-H for horizontal flow. Both share the same two-part valve body assembled with a clamp ring and sealed with a precision seal ring, keeping the wetted path fully hygienic and the installation straightforward.

Wetted steel parts in 1.4301 (304) or 1.4404 (316L) stainless steel, an inside surface finish of Ra < 0.8 µm, and EPDM elastomers as standard place the LKC within hygienic process requirements. Available with weld or clamp ends for both ISO and DIN tubing, it fits directly into existing process lines without adaptation — across sizes from DN25 to DN100.

Get in touch

The Alfa Laval LKC hygienic non-return valve keeps product moving in one direction only — without contamination risk and without manual intervention. Its self-acting mechanism responds to flow conditions alone: forward pressure opens the valve, back pressure or flow reversal closes it.

How does a spring-loaded check valve plug prevent backflow?

A spring-loaded valve plug fitted with an o-ring seal sits at the centre of the LKC's operating principle. Forward flow exerts inlet pressure that compresses the spring and lifts the plug off its seat, opening the flow path. When pressure drops or reverses, the spring drives the plug back onto the seat — blocking reverse flow before it can propagate upstream. Closure is passive and instantaneous.

Alignment is handled by a guide disc with four legs, which keeps the valve plug centred within the body throughout its travel. Without consistent alignment, a plug under spring load can cant sideways and produce uneven seating — leading to leakage or premature seal wear. The four-leg guide disc eliminates that variability, ensuring the plug seats squarely every cycle.

LKC-2 vs LKC-H — which orientation variant fits your process line?

The LKC comes in two orientation-specific variants, and choosing correctly is a genuine engineering decision. The LKC-2 suits vertical flow installations — in vertical pipe runs, gravity assists the spring in returning the plug to the closed position, which improves closure reliability at low differential pressures. The LKC-H is configured for horizontal flow, where the spring must close the valve without gravitational assistance. Selecting the wrong variant for a given orientation risks sluggish closure or incomplete seating under low-flow or low-pressure conditions.

Hygienic construction and surface finish for food-grade process lines

All product-wetted steel parts are available in either 1.4301 (304) or 1.4404 (316L) stainless steel. The inside surface finish is held to Ra < 0.8 µm — a level that limits microbial adhesion sites and supports effective cleaning without product carryover. EPDM rubber is the standard elastomer for the valve plug o-ring and seal ring, rated for temperatures up to 140°C — covering hot water sanitisation and most thermal processes in hygienic industries.

Connection options across ISO and DIN tube standards

The LKC accepts weld ends and clamp ends, covering ISO and DIN tubing across six nominal sizes per standard — from ISO 25 / DIN 25 up to ISO 101.6 / DIN 100. Weights range from 0.5 kg at the smallest size to 4.3 kg at DN100 / ISO 101.6, keeping the valve easy to handle during installation. The consistent connection logic across both tube standards means the LKC integrates without modification into process lines built to either convention.

FAQ

Euroflow serves customers across southern and central Germany — covering postal code areas 66–99 and 07–08, spanning Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse, Thuringia, and Saxony. As an Alfa Laval Master Distributor for tank manufacturers, plant engineers, system suppliers, and end customers, we provide expert support in selecting and designing systems for viscous product handling and cleaning applications.

The choice depends on your pipeline orientation. The LKC-2 is designed for vertical flow where gravity assists the spring-loaded plug, while the LKC-H is specifically for horizontal flow applications where the spring must act without gravitational help.

With standard EPDM elastomers, the LKC can operate at a maximum temperature of 140°C. This makes it suitable for various thermal processes and high-temperature cleaning cycles common in food and dairy industries .

The valve body and wetted components can be supplied in either 1.4301 (304) or 1.4404 (316L) stainless steel. Both options provide a high-quality surface finish of Ra < 0.8 µm to prevent microbial adhesion.
