Alfa Laval BaseLine Plattenwärmeübertrager

Alfa Laval BaseLine hygienic plate heat exchanger

The Alfa Laval BaseLine is a hygienic plate heat exchanger range built for process environments where thermal efficiency and cleanability define equipment selection. Four models span the series: Base 3, Base 6, Base 10, and Base 11, each a gasketed plate heat exchanger configured for dairy, food, beverage, and pharmaceutical operations. Plate and gasket types can be matched to your specific duty. The heat transfer area is modifiable, so a single frame adapts as process requirements shift. CIP compatibility is standard across the range, and every unit opens quickly for manual inspection when needed. Select models offer Gemini double-wall plates, providing a physical barrier against fluid intermixing. Connections follow DIN, SMS, Tri-CLAMP, BS/RJT, and IDF/ISO standards. The BaseLine range can be manufactured to support 3A certification and ships with FDA-compliant gaskets. Alfa Laval's global service network backs every unit from commissioning through the full operating lifecycle.

Get in touch

The Alfa Laval BaseLine hygienic plate heat exchanger transfers thermal energy between two fluid streams inside a compact, fully cleanable frame that meets hygienic manufacturing standards. Four models — Base 3, Base 6, Base 10, and Base 11 — cover a wide range of capacity and footprint requirements. All share the plate-and-frame architecture, but each carries distinct characteristics suited to different process scales and temperature programs.

How does a modifiable heat transfer area reduce downtime?

Every BaseLine unit uses a plate-and-frame architecture. Plates stack between a fixed frame plate and a movable pressure plate, clamped together by tightening bolts. Adding or removing plates changes the active heat transfer area without replacing the entire unit. When a production line shifts from one product to another, or seasonal throughput changes demand different thermal duty, the same frame accommodates the adjustment. Downtime stays limited to the time required to open, restack, and re-torque the unit.

The frame itself supports this flexibility through several mechanical details. Bearing boxes on the Base 6, Base 10, and Base 11 keep the pressure plate rolling smoothly during opening. The Base 11 adds a pressure plate roller and connection plate roller for its larger frame. Clip-on gaskets seat without adhesive, so plate removal and replacement during reconfiguration is fast. A corner-guided alignment system on the Base 6 and Base 10, or a five-point alignment system on the Base 11, ensures plates register correctly every time they are restacked. These details directly determine how many labour hours a reconfiguration costs.

Gemini double-wall plates for fluid intermixing protection

The Base 3 and Base 6 offer an optional Gemini double-wall plate configuration alongside the standard single-plate layout. Gemini plates are fully cleanable and accessible and are used as an extra precaution to avoid intermixing of fluids. If a plate develops a pinhole or crack, fluid leaks into the inter-wall gap and drains to a visible tell-tale point rather than passing into the opposing stream, providing immediate visual indication of plate integrity.

Gemini plates are manufactured from Alloy 316 and do not compromise CIP performance. The leak chamber feature, available across the range, provides a secondary line of containment at each gasket boundary. Together, these design choices create layered protection without adding operational complexity.

Base 11: tall-plate design for high heat recovery

The Base 11 stands apart in the range. Its plate is relatively tall at 670 mm width with a frame length reaching up to 3,820 mm. That geometry suits duties with long temperature programs, where a longer thermal path extracts more energy per pass and supports higher heat recovery applications.

Operationally, the Base 11 handles pressures up to 20.8 barg and temperatures from −25 °C to 160 °C. That pressure rating exceeds the Base 3, Base 6, and Base 10, which top out at 14.3 barg. The wider operating window opens the Base 11 to duties involving higher-viscosity fluids or elevated process pressures. Its five-point alignment system and two-point foot support on the column address the practical reality of servicing a larger unit: plates stay positioned reliably, and the frame remains stable during opening.

Material grades, gasket chemistry, and certification pathways

Plate material selection varies by model. The Base 3 uses 316/316L for single plates and Alloy 316 for Gemini plates. The Base 6 offers 316/316L and 254 single-plate options and Gemini plates in Alloy 316. The Base 10 and Base 11 offer single-plate materials in 304/304L, 316/316L, and 254.

Gasket materials span NBR, EPDM, and FKM across the range, though the Base 11 lists only NBR and EPDM. All gaskets are produced in compliance with FDA regulations. Other materials may be available on request.

Frame and pressure plates come in solid stainless steel, cladded stainless steel, or surface-coated options. Connections are acid-proof stainless steel, available in DIN, SMS, Tri-CLAMP, BS/RJT, and IDF/ISO standards. Every BaseLine model can be manufactured to 3A certification, aligning with sanitary requirements in dairy and food environments.

Gemini plates use two pressed sheets with an inter-wall gap that drains to a visible tell-tale point. If one wall develops a leak, fluid is directed to the inter-wall channel and detected visually rather than crossing into the opposing stream. The option is available on the Base 3 and Base 6.

The BaseLine range offers NBR, EPDM, and FKM gaskets depending on model; the Base 11 lists NBR and EPDM. All gaskets are produced in compliance with FDA regulations. Choose gasket material based on fluid compatibility and operating temperature.

Yes. The plate-and-frame design allows plates to be added or removed within the existing frame to change the active heat transfer area. Clip-on gaskets and bearing boxes simplify plate removal and restacking, reducing reconfiguration time.
