Specifying a valve control head means weighing commissioning effort, CIP water and chemical cost per cycle, diagnostic traceability back to the PLC, and the practical fit with an installed valve fleet. The ThinkTop V70 valve sensing and control unit answers each concern with concrete features: fewer manual commissioning steps via rule-based recognition, position-controlled seat cleaning tied to verifiable PLC handshakes, three interface variants for direct integration, and a single sensor target that drops onto prior-generation Alfa Laval valves.

Auto Setup valve commissioning, Live Setup, and Flex Setup

Auto Setup is a rule-based function. The ThinkTop recognises the valve from its DNA profile and completes the programming sequence after pressing SELECT and then ENTER — no manual tolerance band entry, no dismantling. Live Setup carries the same logic but runs as a remote configuration without opening the control head, which is useful on installed valves that are awkward to reach. Where the rule set does not apply — long-stroke single-seat valves, regulating applications, other valve brands, or one control unit driving multiple actuators — Flex Setup acts as the retrofit mode and lets the unit be configured without restrictions.

Up to 95% CIP liquid savings with burst and pulse seat clean

The position-based seat cleaning functions are where the ThinkTop V70 returns value cycle after cycle. Pulse seat clean is intended for high CIP flow pressure on single-seat or butterfly valves used as drain valves. It requires one solenoid valve, no setup, a PLC input of at least 500 ms, and recovers in two seconds before the next pulse. It is supported on the AS-Interface and IO-Link variants — pulse seat clean is not available on the Digital interface variant. Burst seat clean handles Mixproof valve gaskets during pressurised CIP flow. It needs a ThinkTop configured with two or three solenoid valves, can be enabled manually on the control board or remotely from the PLC, and can alternate between high CIP flow pressure and gravity cleaning. Together these functions support up to 95% CIP liquid savings per seat clean.

Communication variants for modern PLC architectures

Three variants cover most plant standards. The Digital 24V PNP variant uses a 12-pin M12 chassis connector with spring-force push-in terminals and PNP outputs rated at 24V/100 mA per channel. The AS-Interface variant is available in v2.11 (slave profile 7FFF, up to 31 nodes) and v3.0 (extended A/B addressing, slave profile 7A77, up to 62 nodes), both on a 4-pin M12. The IO-Link variant runs COM 2 at 38.4 kBaud with a 5 ms minimum cycle time, supports data storage (which must be actively selected in the PLC hardware configuration), and uses Port class A. Both pre- and post-December 2021 IODDs are bundled, and the configuration tool auto-matches the correct one. Diagnostic data — solenoid activations, stroke times, pressure shock counter, temperature, and event log — is exposed through the IO-Link interface for traceability back to the control system.

Built for hygienic environments and 24/7 visibility

A 360-degree LED light guide makes valve position and unit status readable from any angle on the platform. The housing meets IP69K and NEMA 4, 4X, and 6. Working temperature is -10 °C to +60 °C, sensor accuracy is ±0.1 mm, and MTTF is 224 years. Vibration tolerance is 18 Hz–1 kHz at 7.54g RMS with 100 g shock resistance. Materials are selected for hygienic duty: Nylon PA 12 plastic parts, 1.4301 / 304 stainless steel, NBR gaskets, and a stainless steel M12 chassis connector with gold-plated pins.

Retrofit-ready on existing Alfa Laval valves

The ThinkTop V70 is interchangeable with prior ThinkTop versions. Retrofitting requires only one sensor target and the included adapter, which lets plants modernise sensing and control without replacing the valve body. USA compliance option for Mixproof valves with three solenoid valves

For sites that must meet US regulations on independent closed-position feedback signals, the USA compliance option provides a dedicated bit mapping on Mixproof valves fitted with three solenoid valves. It is enabled either locally on the control board (SELECT pressed five times until LED 8 flashes, then ENTER) or as an adjustable IO-Link parameter. The option is disabled by factory default and persists through a manual reset to factory default if previously enabled.
