One-size-fits-all sensing and control unit for diaphragm valves

The ThinkTop V55 uses a single physical sensor target mounted on the valve stem to track position with ±0.1 mm accuracy. It can be configured with 0 or 1 solenoid valves, depending on whether the actuator needs pilot air switching from the head itself. Key dimensions span 35 to 180 mm, so the unit fits into manifold-dense skids and tight tank tops where larger control heads will not. The platform is shared across the ThinkTop V-series, which gives plant teams a consistent operating logic across valve sizes and types.

IO-Link valve sensor, AS-Interface, and digital communication on one platform

The ThinkTop V55 ships in three communication variants. The Digital 24 VDC PNP version uses a 6-wire, 8-pin M12 connection and is rated to EN 61131-2 with protection against reverse polarity, brown-out, and short circuit. The AS-Interface variants — ThinkTop V55 ASI2 (v2.11, up to 31 nodes, slave profile 7FFF) and ThinkTop V55 ASI3 (v3.0, up to 62 nodes, slave profile 7A77) — run over a 2-wire, 4-pin M12 connection at 29.5–31.6 VDC. The IO-Link variant (ThinkTop V55 IOL) runs COM 2 at 38.4 kBaud with a minimum cycle time of 5 ms, Port Class A, data storage enabled, and supports up to 20 m of cable to the IO-Link master.

Auto Setup and Live Setup: commissioning and live replacement without production stops

Auto Setup is a rule-based function: press SELECT, then ENTER, and the ThinkTop recognises the valve type and completes the position sequence automatically. Where rule prerequisites are not met, Flex Setup acts as a retrofit fallback. Live Setup allows remote configuration without dismantling the control head, which is the route plant teams use to replace a unit on a running line. On IO-Link installations, data storage restores many identity and setup parameters when configured in the IO-Link master — including vendor and product identifiers, setup positions, and setup state — while some custom tags and diagnostic counters such as SV activations, stroke counts, and pressure shock events require reassignment.

Self-diagnostics and fail-safe valve state signal

Valve state is a decentralized fail-safe signal available on all ThinkTop V55 variants. The signal stays high when no errors are detected and drops low on specific conditions — sensor target missing, position not reached, unexpected valve movement, solenoid valve missing, safety stop, or, on Digital, voltage low. This logic lets engineers monitor process issues directly from the head and simplifies PLC valve surveillance code. With a stated MTTF of 224 years and a B10 of 5 million cycles on the pilot solenoid, the unit is designed for long service intervals; Alfa Laval recommends operating the solenoid once a month to prevent dry-out.

Built for hygienic environments: materials, IP69K, and environmental tolerance

Plastic parts are Nylon PA 12, steel parts are 1.4301 / 304 stainless steel, gaskets are NBR, and the M12 chassis connector uses stainless steel with gold-plated pins. The unit is rated IP69K and NEMA 4, 4X, and 6, with a working temperature range of -10 °C to +60 °C. Mechanical tolerance covers vibration of 18 Hz–1 kHz at 7.54 g RMS, shock of 100 g, constant humidity of 93% RH at +40 °C over 21 days, and 12 cycles of -25 °C to +55 °C cyclic humidity. ATEX and IEC-Ex hazardous-area approvals are not available. The unit is UL/CSA certified under E174191.

360° LED light guide for at-a-glance valve status

A continuous 360° light guide colour-codes valve status so operators can read state from any angle on the line. Green indicates the actuator is de-energized; white indicates energized; red flashing combinations indicate error states. The ThinkTop V55 is a hygienic valve feedback unit primarily designed for diaphragm valves, with Auto Setup and Live Setup tuned to common valve types. Flex Setup extends compatibility to selected additional valves, but the unit is not compatible with safety valves, regulating valves, Koltek shutter valves, or diaphragm actuators with open/closed feedback structures. Use the Alfa Laval Anytime configurator to confirm fit for your specific valve size and type.

The IO-Link variant runs Port Class A at COM 2 (38.4 kBaud) with data storage that, when configured in the IO-Link master, restores vendor identity, product identifiers, hardware and firmware versions, and setup positions to a replacement unit. Customisation tags such as Application Specific Tag, Function Tag, and Location Tag, along with diagnostic counters like SV activations and pressure shock events, must be reassigned after the swap. Combined with Live Setup, this keeps replacement fast and avoids production stops.

The unit is rated IP69K and NEMA 4, 4X, and 6, with a working temperature of -10 °C to +60 °C and validated vibration, shock, and humidity tolerance. ATEX and IEC-Ex hazardous-area approvals are not available for this product, so it should not be specified for classified zones.
