Alfa Laval ThinkTop DeviceNet

Alfa Laval ThinkTop DeviceNet

The Alfa Laval ThinkTop DeviceNet valve control unit is a modular control head built for automated sensing and control of hygienic valves across demanding process lines. It delivers real-time valve status 24/7, combining a no-touch, set-and-forget sensor system with a robust DeviceNet PLC interface that integrates cleanly into existing automation networks.

Engineered for accuracy and uptime, the unit detects valve stem movement to within ±0.1 mm, drives up to three solenoid valves, and reports up to five distinct feedback signals back to the controller. LEDs on the housing provide instant local visibility of valve positions, solenoid activation, and fault states — so operators see what the PLC sees.

Universal fit is a defining advantage: the control head mounts on all Alfa Laval hygienic valves with no adapter required, simplifying specification, spares, and standardisation across plants. Sealed to IP66 and IP67, it withstands washdown and rugged hygienic environments. Engineers, plant managers, and procurement teams in dairy, food, beverage, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical operations rely on it for dependable, low-TCO valve automation.

Get in touch

The ThinkTop DeviceNet valve control unit solves a recurring challenge in hygienic process automation: getting accurate, repeatable valve feedback into a DeviceNet network without complex adapters, fragile mechanical switches, or lengthy recommissioning every time a valve is serviced. Built as a modular sensing and control head, it sits on top of Alfa Laval hygienic valves and converts physical valve movement into reliable digital signals for the PLC.

Hygienic valve sensing with ±0.1 mm accuracy

At the core is a microchip sensor board that calculates the angle of an axial magnetic field generated by an indication pin on the valve stem. This no-touch, set-and-forget architecture means there are no mechanical contacts to wear, drift, or fail. Sensor accuracy is ±0.1 mm across a stroke length range of 0.1–80 mm, and five tolerance band options (default ±5 mm) let the unit accommodate normal valve movement while flagging genuine faults. The result: fewer false alarms, less re-adjustment, and consistent traceability.

DeviceNet PLC interface and integration

The unit communicates over DeviceNet with a supply voltage of 11–25 VDC and baud rates of 125K, 250K, and 500K. Default slave address is 63, and Class 4 2-byte Polling provides deterministic I/O Slave messaging. Configuration uses EDS files — Top46-7j for ThinkTop units before 2012 and T-Top RTA for units after 2012 — so commissioning engineers can drop the device into existing DeviceNet architectures without bespoke driver work.

Automated valve feedback and solenoid control

Up to five feedback signals are reported back to the PLC: Closed valve, Open valve, Seat-lift 1, Seat-lift 2, and Status. On the actuation side, the head can carry up to three electric solenoid valves in 3/2-way or 5/2-way configurations, converting compressed air at 300–900 kPa (3–9 bar) into pneumatic actuation. A manual hold override and 0–100% throttle on air in and out give commissioning teams precise control over valve stroke speed.

Built for hygienic process environments

Construction uses stainless steel and brass for metal parts, Blue Nylon PA 12 for plastic parts, and NBR seals — a combination chosen for chemical resistance and washdown durability. The working temperature range is –20 °C to +85 °C, and the enclosure is rated IP66 and IP67 (equivalent to NEMA 4.4x and 6P). Push-in pneumatic fittings are available in ø6 mm or 1/4".

Universal fit and fast commissioning

The control head fits all Alfa Laval hygienic valves without an adapter, simplifying spares strategy and reducing engineering overhead. Setup is straightforward: a push-button startup sequence handles initial configuration, and an optional IR keypad enables remote programming without dismantling the housing. Dimensions: total height 300 mm, body height 225 mm, width 172 mm, ø137 mm.
